Yalumba The Octavius Old Vine Shiraz, Barossa Valley
Yalumba
Established on 184, family-owned and run by Robert Hill-Smith,Yalumba has a long commitment to quality and great vision in its selection of vineyard sites, new varieties and brands. It has always been a serious player at the top end of full-bodied (and full-blooded) Australian reds, and was a pioneer in the use of screwcaps. While its estate vineyards are largely planted to mainstream varieties, it has taken marketing ownership of viognier. However, these days its own brands revolve around the Y Series and a number of stand-alone brands across the length and breadth of South Australia. A founding member of Australia's First Families of Wine.

Tasting note: Yalumba The Octavius Old Vine Shiraz, Barossa Valley
The aromatics show off its Eden Valley heritage, with fresh floral berry fruits and sweet dark cherries. The palate depth showcases the Barossa Valley, with dark, brooding chocolate, dark plum roundness and great concentration. The cool freshness of Eden Valley develops with the supporting acid and grainy tannin giving the wine structure for long term cellaring. Best to keep it locked away for at least 5 years, but if you do open, double decant and enjoy alongside a slow roasted lamb shank, or chargrilled cauliflower with fried butterbeans and pumpkin hummus.
